Choosing a color brand

Why the brand behind your color matters

The brand shapes how predictable a formula is, how dependable the coverage is, and the condition your hair is left in. Vanessa will tell you which Goldwell lines go into your formula and why.

  1. Predictable from visit to visit

Professional color is built around formulas that can be written down and repeated. That repeatability is why next month's touch-up can match today's color instead of beginning with a guess.

  2. Coverage with known limits

Topchic, Topchic Zero, and Elumen each carry Goldwell's rating of up to 100% grey coverage; Colorance is rated for blending up to 75%. Understanding each line's purpose helps Vanessa decide with you between full coverage and a softer blend.

  3. Hair condition, not only shade

According to Goldwell, Topchic includes IntraLipid and BondPro+ technology, and its lighteners come with BondPro+ bond protection. The way your hair feels once colored is as important as the shade.

  4. Every kind of color from one maker

Permanent, demi-permanent, direct dye, and lightener all come from one brand. That lets Vanessa plan base, lift, and toner together as one formula, with products she knows well.

Not sure which service fits yet? Begin with the hair color overview, or call the salon and reception will find the right appointment. Vanessa talks through your goal with you before any color is mixed.

01Permanent color

Topchic

Permanent color, from a tube or a can

Topchic is Goldwell's permanent color, mixed either from a tube or from what Goldwell calls color in a can, its Depot Can System. Vanessa uses it for gray coverage, root touch-ups, and all-over color, and as the base beneath highlights or balayage.

Colorance

Gloss, toner, and gentle gray blending

Goldwell makes Colorance as an ammonia-free demi-permanent color. It deposits tone without lifting your natural shade, which suits toning blondes after lightening, adding gloss, reviving faded color, and blending gray softly. Colorance Gloss Tones is the fast liquid gloss and toner in the line.

Elumen

Saturated color that fades true

Most permanent color is mixed with developer. Goldwell describes Elumen as an acidic direct dye used without one, and rates it for up to 76% more color intensity than oxidative color. Vanessa often reaches for it for vivid pinks, magentas, reds, and coppers.

05Lighteners with bond protection

LightDimensions

Lift for blondes and bright bases

LightDimensions is Goldwell's lightener family: SilkLift Strong, SilkLift Zero Ammonia, SilkLift Clay, SilkLift Control Ash and Control Pearl, Oxycur Platin, and the Brighteners. Vanessa uses them to lift hair for highlights, balayage, and blonde, and to create the clean base a vivid depends on.

These come from the maker and are not promises from the salon.

Maximum lift by lightener, per Goldwell

Each level is one step lighter on the hair color level scale, which runs from black to the palest blonde. The numbers are Goldwell's maximums; how far your own hair should go is a separate decision Vanessa makes after reviewing its condition and history.

A general guide. The final formula is set when Vanessa sees your hair.

BondPro+

Protecting hair during lightening

Lightening changes each strand on the inside, beyond its color. Goldwell adds protection to the process, while Vanessa decides how much lift your hair can take in one visit.

BondPro+ bond protection against damage and breakage.

Goldwell, describing its LightDimensions lighteners. Goldwell also names IntraLipid and BondPro+ technology in Topchic to protect hair during coloring.
  • What lightening does inside the hair

Lightener opens the cuticle and breaks down pigment within each strand. Along the way, some of the inner bonds that keep hair strong are disturbed, and that is why over-lightened hair may turn gummy or break.

  • Part of the service

Bond protection is mixed in during lightening as part of your appointment. You do not book it as a separate treatment.

  • What it cannot do

It does not make every goal safe in one sitting. Dark to pale blonde, or lifting through old box dye, can still require several appointments, and Vanessa plans those stages with you.

  • At home

Mild shampoo, a heat protectant, and trims on a regular schedule help lightened hair stay stronger against coastal sun and salt.

Switching salons

Bringing your Goldwell formula with you

Loved your Goldwell color at a previous salon? Bring whatever you can. A written formula is useful, and Vanessa reads your hair whether you have one or not.

A sample of the details a formula card holds. Your salon's card may differ.
  • The formula itself, if possible

Ask your previous salon for the line, shade numbers, and developer. Many salons keep a formula card on file for every client.

  • The salon's name, if not

No formula? That is fine. The salon's name and an approximate date of your last color still tell Vanessa a lot.

  • Daylight photos

A photo taken in natural light shows tone better than any description. If you have one showing your color at its peak, bring it.

  • Anything done at home

Box dye, henna, a home gloss, or a color-depositing shampoo each affect how fresh color develops. Bring it up even if it happened months back.

Why one formula can turn out two ways

Between appointments your hair keeps changing. Sun, salt water, and shampoo fade the old color, while new growth has none at all. Vanessa looks at the new growth, the way your previous color has faded, and how healthy the ends are, and tunes the formula toward the result you remember. Old color that has gone brassy or patchy may need a brief color correction plan first.

Pricing

Pricing Goldwell color

Color is priced as a service, not as a product. Vanessa gives you the price once she has seen your hair, before any work begins.

  • Which service you book, since a gloss, a root touch-up, and full highlights are very different appointments
  • Length and thickness, which set how much color or lightener is mixed
  • Each lightening, toning, or gloss step adds time
  • Corrections and big changes may be split across more than one visit

Which Goldwell lines does Vanessa use?

Vanessa colors with all five Goldwell lines: Topchic, Topchic Zero, Colorance, Elumen, and LightDimensions. You will find her at 236 Riverbeach Dr. in Ormond Beach.

What Goldwell training does Vanessa have?

Vanessa completed Goldwell's MasterColorist Color Technician course in New York City in 2026, and Goldwell is the only color brand she uses.

Does Topchic Zero contain ammonia?

No. According to Goldwell, Topchic Zero is 100% ammonia-free and vegan, offers up to 100% grey coverage, and comes in 38 shades. Let the salon know as you book if an ammonia-free permanent color is your preference.

What makes Elumen different?

A permanent acidic direct dye from Goldwell, Elumen is mixed without developer. The maker lists no peroxide, no ammonia, and no PPD or PTD, rates it for up to 76% more color intensity than oxidative color, and says it fades true to tone. Vanessa often uses it for vivids.

Can you match the Goldwell color I had at another salon?

Bring the formula if your previous salon will share it, plus photos of the color you liked. Vanessa reads the new growth and the fade of your last color, then fine-tunes the formula toward the shade you remember. If there is no formula, she creates one based on your hair.

Can I buy Goldwell products here?

This site covers in-salon color services only. At your appointment, Vanessa recommends home care suited to your color.

Which Goldwell line is best for gray?

For full coverage, Goldwell rates Topchic, Topchic Zero, and Elumen at up to 100% grey coverage. For a softer look, Colorance is rated for blending up to 75%. Vanessa starts by asking which of those you want.

What is a Colorance gloss?

It is Goldwell's liquid gloss and toner, called Colorance Gloss Tones. The maker says it processes in 10 minutes and gives up to 3x more shine than untreated hair. Vanessa may use it to finish blondes after highlights or balayage, or as a quick refresh between bigger color visits.

Which color is best for a sensitive scalp?

Let the salon know when you book. Topchic Zero is made without ammonia, and Goldwell suggests Elumen for anyone sensitive to oxidative dyes, with a patch test first. If hair color has ever caused you a reaction, see your doctor before your appointment.
