Foil highlights

Highlights in Ormond Beach, mapped to how you part your hair

More blonde, more dimension, or a gentler line where gray grows in. Vanessa maps each foil to your part and the way you wear your hair, at Hair Goddess Salon, Spa & Boutique on 236 Riverbeach Dr. in Ormond Beach.

Partial or full is something you and Vanessa decide together, once she has seen your hair in person.

How foils work

Highlights, defined

A highlight is a lightened strand that runs from just beside the scalp to the very tips, which is why the brightness is visible the moment you part your hair.

  • Foil work

Thin sections are woven or sliced away from the rest, coated in lightener, and wrapped in foil. The wrap keeps lightener from touching neighboring hair, so each strand lifts cleanly and your other color stays untouched.

  • Light from the scalp

Every foil sits close to the scalp, so the brightness starts right at your part. This is usually what people picture when they say highlights, and it explains why new growth shows sooner than with balayage.

  • Measured placement

Section size and the spacing between foils shape the finished look. Fine, tightly spaced foils come across soft and blended, while thicker pieces with wider gaps read bolder and more striped.

Highlights sit within the salon's hair color services, next to balayage, gray coverage, color correction, and vivid color. Unsure where you fit? Book with Vanessa and she will steer you in the chair.

Where the foils go

Partial, full, and finer placements

Placement decides whether highlights read as yours. When she sees your hair, Vanessa weighs your part, your everyday style, and how often you like to visit, then suggests one of these options or a combination.

  • Partial highlights

    Foils placed
Across the top, along the part, and framing the face, while the underneath stays your own shade.
    A good match for
First-time highlights, a gentler change, or hair you usually wear loose.
  • Full highlights

    Foils placed
All over the head: the top, sides, back, and the layers underneath.
    A good match for
A clearly lighter result, ponytails and updos, or brightness seen from any side.
  • Face-framing

    Foils placed
A handful of lighter pieces along the front hairline, on each side of the part.
    A good match for
Brightness near your face with minimal upkeep, or a lift between full visits.
  • Babylights

    Foils placed
Very thin, closely set sections, mostly on top and near the face.
    A good match for
A soft, natural glow whose grow-out is hard to notice.
  • Lowlights

    Foils placed
Deeper pieces woven in between the lighter ones to rebuild depth.
    A good match for
Hair that drifted too blonde, or a richer blend for salt and pepper hair.

Gray blending

Softening gray regrowth with highlights

Solid all-over color hides gray evenly, and then each week of new growth shows as a band against it. Highlights take the opposite approach: lighter strands woven through your own color sit near the brightness of gray, so silver blends in as it grows.

  • A gentler root as it grows

Fresh silver lands beside lighter strands, so the regrowth looks like part of the color rather than a stripe along the part.

  • Longer between appointments

You can often wait longer between visits than with full gray coverage. Vanessa suggests a schedule based on how quickly your hair grows.

  • Lowlights for richness

If highlights on their own feel too bright, lowlights restore a little natural depth so the blend still looks like you.

Should you choose highlights or balayage?

Each one brightens selected pieces. They differ in how the lightener is applied and where the light begins, and the two can be combined.

Goldwell lighteners and toner for foil highlights

Highlights call for a lightener that lifts evenly from the root and a toner that settles the shade. Vanessa works with these Goldwell products for foils, and agrees the level of lift and the final tone with you before any lightener is mixed.

The visit

Your highlights appointment, in order

  1. 01

    Tell the salon your goal

Call the salon, ask to book with Vanessa, and describe what you are after: brighter, blonder, gentler gray, or a refresh of the highlights you have now. Reception will book the time.

  2. 02

    Vanessa sees your hair

Bring photos you love. Before any lightener is mixed, she reads your natural shade and any existing color, notes your part and daily styling, suggests a placement, and confirms the price.

  3. 03

    Foils, then toner

Each wrapped section lifts to the brightness the two of you chose. After the rinse, a toner or gloss usually fine-tunes the shade and adds shine.

  4. 04

    Cut and style

A trim or a new shape if you would like one, followed by a finished style and a few tips for keeping the color bright at home.

Keeping blonde clean

Fighting brass in the Ormond Beach sun

Bright sun, the ocean, and pool days are part of life here. A handful of habits keeps blonde highlights crisp between appointments.

Lightened hair frizzing in the humidity? A keratin smoothing treatment may help, and Vanessa can plan when to do it around your color.

  • Where brass comes from

Lightening reveals the warm pigment inside your hair. Toner cancels it out, but toner wears away with washing, sunshine, and the ocean, and the warmth creeps back.

  • Purple shampoo

On blonde highlights, use it once or twice a week rather than every wash. Begin with a minute or two and adjust. Overdoing it can leave blonde flat or faintly violet.

  • Sunshine and the ocean

Strong sun and salt water can strip toner quickly. Wear a hat for long afternoons on the sand, use a UV leave-in, and rinse with fresh water after swimming.

  • Pools and hard water

Pool chemicals, and minerals from well water or hard tap water, can cast yellow or green over lightened strands. Rinse with clean water before swimming, and let Vanessa know if your home water is hard.

  • Touch-ups and glosses

Highlights are often refreshed somewhere in the 6 to 12 week range, depending on contrast, placement, and growth. A toner between foil visits keeps the shade clean.

What do highlights cost in Ormond Beach?

Highlights are quoted individually. Placement, length, thickness, and any extra color or a cut all count, and Vanessa gives you the price once she has seen your hair, before any work begins. Call 386-872-2263 to book.

How do I choose between partial and full highlights?

Partial placement concentrates on the top and the face frame, which is what shows when your hair is down. Full placement reaches every section, including underneath, so a ponytail or updo looks just as bright and the overall result can be lighter. When she sees your hair, Vanessa looks at your part and your everyday style before recommending one.

How soon will I need a touch-up?

Usually somewhere in the 6 to 12 week range. Fine foils and gray blending tend to stretch further, while a big gap between your natural shade and the lightened pieces makes regrowth obvious sooner. A gloss between foil visits keeps the tone clean.

Will highlights cover my gray?

Highlights blend gray instead of hiding it. Lighter strands sit close to the brightness of gray, so new growth looks soft rather than like a band at the part. For fuller coverage, all-over color is usually the better route, explained on our gray coverage page. When she sees your hair, Vanessa will weigh how much gray you have and suggest the route that fits.

Why are my highlights turning brassy?

Lightening uncovers warm pigment, and toner is what balances it. Toner fades with washing, sunshine, salt water, and chlorine, so the warmth returns. A weekly purple shampoo, a UV spray, and a fresh gloss between appointments keep it in check. Vanessa can tone with Goldwell Colorance, which Goldwell rates for up to 25 washes.

How much lighter can I go in a single visit?

It hinges on where you start, what is already on your hair (box dye included), and how healthy it is. Deep or previously colored hair often reaches a big lift more safely across two or more appointments. Before she begins, Vanessa will tell you what a single visit can realistically achieve.

How long should I plan to be at the salon?

Length, thickness, and foil count all change the timing. Mention the look you want when you call, and reception will book the time.

Where is the salon, and is it open in the evening?

The salon is at 236 Riverbeach Dr., serving Ormond Beach, Ormond-by-the-Sea, and Holly Hill. Appointments run until 8pm Wednesday through Friday.
